What do I do if I can't file before April 18, 2017?

Do I need an extension?  If you have a refund coming (as about three out of four taxpayers do), then there is no penalty for failing to file your tax return by 4/18/17, even if you don't ask for an extension.  The penalty for filing late is a percentage of the tax owed.

If you expect to owe taxes, you can get an extension by paying all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an Extension using
Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System(EFTPS), or a credit or debit card. This way you won’t have to file a separate extension form and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.

If you expect a refund and cannot get an appointment before 4/18/17 to get your taxes prepared, consider filing them during our summer session.  It will be held Tuesdays (1-3pm) beginning 5/23/17 through 10/3/17 at the Lady Lake Library and appointments will be available, check back for availability the middle of April.

Welcome to AARP Tax Aide in The Villages

AARP Tax-Aide provides free tax counseling for taxpayers with low and middle income with special attention to those age 60 and older. You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service. Tax-Aide volunteers, trained in cooperation with the IRS, offer this service year round.

Every year around the country, our National Organization helps millions of taxpayers get the credits and deductions they deserve.

Started in 1968 by four volunteers, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is now the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation program.

In 2016, over 35,000 volunteers worked at nearly 6,500 Tax-Aide community-based sites in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. We helped 1.7 million people navigate complicated tax codes, receive proper credits and deductions, and file their federal, state and local tax returns.
